A Musical Crush
Raaf and I first crossed paths at Voltage Control in Paradiso, where we both made our debut performing with modular synthesizers. However, our real introduction happened during a trip to Superbooth in Berlin. What started as a shared passion for modular synthesizers and music quickly grew into a special friendship. Beyond our mutual love for sounds and melodies, we discovered that we also had a lot in common on a personal level. For instance, we both work in arts education at a university.
After returning from Berlin, we couldn’t wait to make music together. Our first session was magical; from the very first moment, we felt something special happening. The music we created gave us both goosebumps. It felt as if all the puzzle pieces were falling into place.
We decided to meet up more often, and these sessions quickly became a regular fixture in our schedules. The joy and inspiration we draw from our collaboration led us to decide to perform together more often—although we both still want to continue doing solo performances as well.
When a recent open call came up for Modular on the Spot, we didn’t hesitate for a second. This event was the perfect opportunity for us to step forward as a duo and do a try-out. A small-scale setting, outdoors, under the trees, on the grass—just perfect.
Our performance didn’t go exactly as we had planned during rehearsals, but the core of it remained intact. There’s a big difference between preparing music in the calm environment of a home studio and performing under pressure in a completely different setting—outdoors, in front of an audience. Still, we were very happy with the outcome. The audience seemed enthusiastic as well, and this try-out felt like a solid first step in our journey as a duo.

Een muzikale crush
Raaf en ik kwamen elkaar voor het eerst tegen tijdens Voltage Control in Paradiso, waar we allebei ons debuut maakten met het optreden met modulaire synthesizers. De echte kennismaking volgde echter tijdens een trip naar Superbooth in Berlijn. Wat begon als een gedeelde passie voor modulaire synthesizers en muziek, groeide snel uit tot een bijzondere vriendschap. Naast onze gedeelde liefde voor klanken en melodieën, ontdekten we dat we ook op persoonlijk vlak veel gemeen hebben. Zo zijn we beiden werkzaam in het kunstonderwijs op een hogeschool.
Na onze terugkeer uit Berlijn konden we niet wachten om samen muziek te maken. Onze eerste sessie was magisch; vanaf het eerste moment voelden we dat er iets speciaals gebeurde. De muziek die we maakten gaf ons allebei kippenvel. Het voelde alsof allerlei puzzelstukjes op hun plaats vielen.
We besloten vaker af te spreken en deze sessies werden al snel een vaste waarde in onze agenda's. Het plezier en de inspiratie die we uit onze samenwerking halen, heeft ertoe geleid dat we hebben besloten om vaker samen op te gaan treden. Ook al willen we daarnaast ook allebei solo-optredens doen.
Toen er recentelijk een open oproep kwam voor "Modular on the Spot", twijfelden we geen moment. Dit evenement gaf ons de ideale gelegenheid om als duo naar buiten te treden en een try-out te doen. Kleinschalig en lekker buiten in de natuur onder de bomen op het gras.
Ons optreden liep niet precies zoals we gepland hadden tijdens onze voorbereidingen maar de grote lijnen bleven overeind. Het blijft een groot verschil, muziek voorbereiden in de rustige setting van een thuisstudio of presteren onder druk in een compleet andere omgeving in de buitenlucht met toeschouwers. Toch waren we heel tevreden met het resultaat. Het publiek leek ook enthousiast, en deze try-out voelde als een solide eerste stap in onze samenwerking als duo.
Deze samenwerking brengt me naast veel plezier en inspiratie ook de nodige uitdagingen en leermomenten, dus daarover meer in een volgende column.
